Job the Book by John Piper
I found this today in a podcast which I am subscribed to. John Piper is one of the most amazing writers, speakers, and pastors I have seen. He has truly been blessed to present God’s Word in a way that is unlike any other. This book is a book of poetry about suffering, and God’s steadfastness. Obviously I haven’t read it yet, and I won’t be able to buy it for about a week, but I am totally stoked. It is poetry.

Poetry isn’t something I read a lot of, but it is intriguing. I love words, and poetry is all about words. I have never found any really too interesting though, because it is all about love and romance. But this. This is about God, and it is written by one of the clearest Bible teachers of our day. So I am sure it will be a great book.

This was posted on The Resurgence's website about a week or two ago. Last night I finally got the chance to listen to it, and it was great. I really learned a lot about Piper, and I learned a lot about what it takes to be in ministry, and some of the burdens that come along with it. He talked a lot about his marriage and it was this that I thought was particularly insightful. Being a young guy I always want to hear the details about a marriage that has lasted longer than ten years. To watch the interview and read more on the interview, read this post.

John Piper

Last night I listened to the interview of John Piper by Mark Driscoll on The Resurgence. I thought that this interview was awesome. Through this interview I got to see a side of Piper that is rarely displayed through his preaching and writing. He talked about his family, everything from growing up to being the father of an adopted child at an older age.

One of the best parts, at least I thought, was when he began talking about his marriage. He talked about how he is more emotional than his wife. He is the one who is like, “let’s talk.” I thought it was great to see this side of Piper come out. It was very real, and it, to me, showed me that he is much more than just the man behind the pulpit.

The interviewing was interesting. I think Mark Driscoll is a great man of God, but I want to say something that may not sit well with all of you, but I will say it anyway. It was great to see two of the pastor’s which I respect the most talk together in a casual setting. This something that you rarely get to see, and by seeing this I got to see a comparison of attitudes, statements, and the way they composed themselves.

I felt that through the interview I began to feel that Piper is a much more mature and respectable person that Driscoll is. Don’t get me wrong, Driscoll is extremely respectable, but it was amazing to see the difference that the difference in their experience made.

Driscoll is at the point in his carrier where things are really taking off. The Resurgence is doing great, his church is growing, he is writing a lot of books, and he is traveling and speaking all the time. I don’t care how humble you are, this has got to give you some pride. But Piper is on the other end of the spectrum. He has been writing books for years. He has been traveling forever, and Desiring God has been huge for quite some time. He is used to the fame, and I think that he displays a unique humbleness towards the glory which people want to give him.

Piper and Driscoll

Driscoll is too very humble for the oppurtunity and his accomplishments; I just think it was very interesting to see, or more or less, hear the difference in their voices while they were speaking. Maybe I over analyze, but yeah… It is what it is.

I have attached the video of this interview below for you to download and listen to. I got this video and these photos from The Resurgence.

And when I say that I am not exaggerating. Piper writes this book with the intention to show our purpose, and that purpose is to live to glorify Christ and find our Joy in him.

Through reading this book I have developed a much more complex perspective of what my purpose is in this life. But it is funny; I haven’t gained this perspective because of a bunch of soft little stories or because of the things I will receive if I adopt this perspective. But I have acquired this new perspective, because of the conviction of the plea which this book contains.

Piper does an awesome job at telling his readers that this life is not about them… At All!!! I know this sounds crazy, but he takes you on a trip through scripture which will prove to you, if you are willing, that you were designed for far more than having the perfect life. But we were designed to glorify Jesus Christ.

Towards the end of the book he sums the whole thing up by explaining how we can better glorify Christ in our jobs and in missions. I highly recommend this book because I think it will really change your perspective of life and joy. You will find yourself wanting to do things you never thought of in the past. And most of all you will learn to appreciate Christ in a way that you may never have before.

You know what I’m talking about. It was one of those mornings where I just didn’t want to wake up, because my bed was just so comfortable. But I eventually got up and got ready for the day. As I was getting ready all I could think about was this book I started reading a few days ago. It is called Don’t Waste Your LIfe, and It is written by the great author and pastor, John Piper.

I began reading this book, because I have came to a point in my life and with Christ that I know it is time for me to venture onto more things. I am not sure what those things are, so I decided to read this book to get some fuel for the fire. I really don’t want to be that Christian that does nothing with their life, and I also don’t want to be that Christian that tries to do everything and as a result get nothing done.

I have only read two chapters of the book so far, but it has really gotten me to think about what exactly my goals are in my walk with Christ. What is it that I want to see happen from it? What does God want from it? These are all questions that are running through my mind, even as I write this. I would highly encourage anyone who is young and wants to really get a desire to do what God would have for them to read this book ASAP!

What is reality? Some might say it is life. Well, then I would say, What is life? I think lots of people think of life as an experience. Something that we go through over and over again and choose to think of it as our absolute reality. Don’t get me wrong our lives are real, in fact they are one hundred percent real, but they come from someone who is even more real than we are.

Today I listened to a snippet of a sermon by John Piper. If you have never listened to this man preach you really should; I have some of his stuff in my favorites please check him out. In this snippet he said, “You don’t understand, because you are not God. God is absolute reality……He is what you get to deal with in reality.” This is something you need to wrap your mind around.

If God is absolute reality then that means that everything must go through him which is of reality as well. Considering that without a doubt we are within this existence called reality, everything we do will be first go through God for it to be in this reality. I hope I didn’t lose you or sound to “New Age” but what this really means is what is real was ordained by God, and if God does not want it to be a certain way it will not be that way, and if he does want it a certain way it will most deffinitely be that way.
